Shuo Yang holds a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from the University of Pittsburgh. Her research interests include ethnic minority music of Southwest China, popular music of China, sound studies, music and tourism, and decolonizing ethnomusicology. Her most recent work examines the dialogic soundscapes of the religious festival Guerx Sal Lad (raosanling) of the Bai people in the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan, southwest China, and the negotiation and contestation between several key social actors with unequal “volumes” at the intersection of minority folk beliefs, China’s minority politics, and state projects of cultural heritagization.
Shuo obtained her B.A. in Arts Management from the Central Conservatory of Music (Beijing, China) and M.Phil in Ethnomusicology from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She has served as the regional area leader (East Asia) of the ICTMD Study Groups on Music, Education and Social Inclusion, secretary of the ICTMD Study Groups on Indigenous Music and Dance, and the co-editor of Association for Chinese Music Newsletter. She has also worked as an interpreter for several international conferences, including the Joint Symposium of the ICTM Study Groups on Applied Ethnomusicology (6th) & Music, Education and Social Inclusion (2nd) (Beijing, 2018), World Music Week: Southeast Asia Music International Forum, Central Conservatory of Music (Beijing, 2015), and New Musicology: Theories, Methods and Resources Conference (Beijing, 2013).
